FAQs

The MotoGP™ Grand Prix of Australia is a round of the World Championship for motorcycle racing conducted under Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) regulations.

MotoGP™ Grand Prix of Australia is a 3-day event to be held in Adelaide in November ahead of the Supercars Grand Final event from 2027 onwards.

The largest crowd for a motorsport event in history still remains the 1995 Australian Grand Prix (Adelaide), which recorded a four-day weekend attendance of 520,000.

South Australia has earned its reputation as Australia’s motorsport capital through decades of passion, innovation and world-class event delivery.

From the roar of Formula One on Adelaide’s streets in the 1980s and 90s to globally recognised events like the bp Adelaide Grand Final, and the Adelaide Motorsport Festival.

Purpose-built facilities like The Bend Motorsport Park, combined with iconic street racing and a growing calendar of complementary events, ensure South Australia offers something for every motorsport fan.

The MotoGP™ in Adelaide will utilise a variation of the previous Adelaide Grand Prix circuit, creating the first-ever street circuit for MotoGP™ in the modern era.

There will also be variations to the circuit sections in Victoria Park to meet the requirements for FIM circuit homologation and safety standards.

The circuit length is planned to be approximately 4.195 kilometres with 18 turns. The current Supercars version of the Adelaide Street Circuit is 3.22 kilometres and 14 turns.

Hosting the world’s first MotoGP™ race on a street circuit would mark a historic moment, not only for global motorsport, but for South Australia, with the return of the legendary Adelaide Grand Prix Circuit.

This would see an iconic street circuit roar back to life in a new and electrifying form, reconnecting Adelaide with its proud Grand Prix heritage while pushing motorsport into an exciting new era.

A MotoGP™ street race on the Adelaide Grand Prix Circuit would deliver a truly unique fan experience. Watching the world’s best riders race at extraordinary speed through the same city streets that defined a golden era of motorsport would create an atmosphere unlike anything else on the MotoGP™ calendar.

A street circuit brings fans closer to the action, while the surrounding city provides the perfect setting for fan zones, hospitality, live entertainment and activation.

A key component of the circuit design is to ensure there are fantastic viewing locations for fans across the entire circuit, including grandstands. Pit Straight will look every bit as iconic as it does now for the bp Adelaide Grand Final, and as it did in the F1 era.

We are collaborating with MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group and FIM to ensure the pit lane and pit box requirements, together with ancillary facilities will be met. We will work closely with Supercars to ensure we maximise the opportunities and synergies of facilities across both events.

Liberty Media, the owners of MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group and MotoGP™, have made no secret they have been looking at street circuit options. Being the first-ever street circuit for MotoGP™ our goal is for teams and riders to be raving about how good it is. There will be a period of consultation to make sure we get that right.

Safety will be paramount in the planning and delivery of any MotoGP™ event on a street circuit, with no compromises when it comes to the safety of riders. MotoGP™ operates under some of the most rigorous safety standards in global motorsport, and any proposed street circuit would be designed, engineered and approved in close partnership with MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group, the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme and independent safety experts.

Every element, from track layout and surface quality to barriers, run-off solutions would be subject to exhaustive assessment and international best practice.

FIM publishes standards for circuits that must be met with rigorous processes in both the design and implementation phases. The Adelaide Street Circuit will be designed and constructed to meet these standards.

South Australia’s proven track record in delivering safe, world-class street racing events provides a strong foundation. We are focussed on delivering an event that delivers breathtaking racing and a unique fan experience, while maintaining the highest possible safety standards, for competitors and riders.

One of the great advantages of having a Street Circuit in the heart of the city is that there are many more accommodation options available, including excellent camping facilities in and around metro Adelaide and the beaches.

This event puts Adelaide firmly back on the World Championship sporting calendar and has a global broadcast reach of more than 500 million homes. MotoGP™ events around the world attract tens of thousands of visitors to their host cities, generating significant benefits to the visitor economy that more than offset the costs of hosting the event.

More than 70% of attendees to the current Australian MotoGP™ are visitors which will be a massive boost to the South Australian visitor economy come 2027.

It is also about doing things smartly. The close proximity allows us to streamline the build, use and removal of major infrastructure, reducing set-up and pack-down time, minimising disruption for residents and businesses, and getting better value from every dollar invested in temporary pit building, stands, barriers and event infrastructure.

We will collaborate with Supercars on the best circuit configuration for the bp Adelaide Grand Final with the opportunity to also use the longer circuit and the benefits that may bring.

It is planned to initially close the roads for the MotoGP™ event in the same way currently done for the bp Adelaide Grand Final, re-opening some key East-West roads in-between events to minimise the disruption to commuters.

During the MotoGP™ event it is likely the O-Bahn bus routes will be re-directed to their previous routes along North Terrace.

There is a detailed design process to be conducted which means construction will not begin until Spring 2026 at the earliest.  It is important through the planning process to consider the implementation to minimise disruption to community users. The usual public consultation and notification processes will apply as with any road works being conducted.

MotoGP™ bikes are restricted to 130db under the FIM rules, which is about the same as current Formula 1 cars, but more than V8 Supercars.

At MotoGP™, sustainability is a core component of how events are planned, operated and improved over time. As the organiser of the Championship, MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group holds ISO20121, the international standard for sustainable event management.

It is mandatory for all MotoGP™ events to prepare and submit a Sustainability Action Plan for approval.

The circuit layout concept will require validation and refinement with FIM to meet circuit homologation safety standards. There will be some trees impacted by these re-alignments.  An impact assessment will be conducted with a subsequent iteration of the circuit design to minimise these impacts.

The Chequered Copper butterfly species and its colonies inhabiting Pakapakanthi/Victoria Park (Park 16) are known to the South Australian Motor Sport Board (SAMSB). The habitat will be carefully considered as part of the planning and design process for the event.

Potential impacts to biodiversity areas within Victoria Park/Pakapakanthi (Park 16) will be identified and addressed through consultation with the City of Adelaide and relevant stakeholder groups, including Butterfly Conservation SA.

An Environmental Consultant is part of the design team and will consider opportunities to improve biodiversity areas, including better connecting the habitat with the neighbouring wetlands. This may include utilising adjacent areas to ensure there is no net loss to the total area of protected grasslands occupied by the butterfly colonies, associated ant species and caterpillar foodplant.

Whilst we are still in the early stages of planning and consultation, we remain committed to minimising the environmental footprint of events conducted by SAMSB. We are working towards the FIA Environmental Certification Best Practice Principles (BPP) for environmental management in motor sport. This includes ensuring that biodiversity and heritage impacts are identified and mitigated. As the organiser of the Championship, MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group holds ISO20121, the international standard for sustainable event management. This will form part of the certification requirements, whereby SAMSB will be required to prepare and submit a Sustainability Action Plan for approval.
